Robert merritt took over a superintendent just after the centennial party. He set up p t as, established a curriculum council staffed by parents and teachers. His tenure was so successful that some white parents began to return their children to the public schools. When he retired in 19 94, the number of white students in the system had doubled to 14%. The private school, indianola academy still serves nearly all the white students in town.
