In the film, you have these very clear, explicit rules that bailion gets when heis nighted. The success of his journey and heroism is really measured by how much he means to the people around him. So for me, i always saw at like he surrenders the city, which seems like a defeat - but accordingly to kan's philosophy, this would be a victory.
