Haffkin and the Astupasta
Odessa was one of those rare places in Imperial Russia where Jews were not trapped in the kind of fiddler on the roof world and they could get have a secular education. Haffkin became a student at the new university in Odessa and it becomes a student of another extraordinary figure called alien matching Hikof who came from a family of converted Jews. He's given the task which had seemed to be pretty much impossible of coming up with a vaccine against cholera but after a great struggle he does just that.
