The Jungle of Calais
Shakir sold everything he owned and paid a smuggler to take him, his wife, and two small children out of his country. They traveled for months, crossing numerous borders, until in Bulgaria they became separated. Searching for his family along the migration route, Shakir eventually ended up alone in Calais. Separated from the town by factories in a highway, the jungle camp was squalid, dangerous, and lacked basic resources. The camp was demolished in 2016, but Calais remains a destination for many hopeful migrants.
