What's Going on in Italy?
The name normans and normandy comes from northmen, so it's a reference to their viking heritage. By the year one thousand, by the time they're coming to southern italy, they've become a thoroughly francophone o. They're now french speaking, behaving very much like their neighbours in northern france. One of the things that probably is playing some role in their expansion into places like southern italy is this a heritage from scandinavia.
