The Atrium of the Roman House
The atrium was a room from which other rooms led off. The dead of the household would be laid out, and people would come and pay their respect. This is also where the marriage ceremony actually started before they all processed in the streets toe to the groom's house. But fundamentally, as this was where that house owner engaged with his dependents, and the more people were waiting outside his house,. the more power that household owner was displaying to his community.
