Hierarchies among herbivors are much weaker than those among animals that feed on meat or fruit. Animals instead can gain significantly by displacing other animals that come too close to the food that theyare eating. So dominant is a mechanism that has evolved in species that are highly competitive, very social, potentially aggressive and reduce the cost of fighting.
