The World Cup and the Rise of Nazi Germany
After the Anschluss, the Austrian team was obviously merged into a great German nation and became part of the German side. Matthias Sindler, who was probably the most famous member of that Austrian team, chose to just refuse to play for a team representing Nazi Germany. That did have a significant impact. I think Germany weren't strong enough at this point to win the tournament, say it wasn't going to have that much of an impact in that sense. But I think that was important as well.
