The History of the Smoking Cap
The smoking cap was a tassel-soft hat intended to be worn indoors as part of lounge wear, alongside the ubiquitous smoking jacket. The idea was to avoid carrying the smells of tobacco smoke and offending the noses of women. Often smoking caps were made and gifted like mixed tapes between partners and so had elaborate patterns sewn onto the fabric. They were in vogue from the 1840s until the end of the century long enough to feature in Sherlock Holmes stories. But by then they appeared on the heads of slightly dodgy individuals.
