classical liberals believed seriously in a kind of freedom that they didn't think was available. They saw a world crushed by monarchies, aristocracies, elites and ordinary people having no shot at anything. By the 19 sixties, the oppression of ordinary people is seen not just as the as the work of capitalists eleats, but also government states.
