The Troubles in Jones' Town
Members of the People's Temple began writing their families asking for help. Jones was reviewing all incoming and outgoing mail and would censor any negative messages. The government hesitated to intervene, especially with Jones' powerful political allies still backing him. That changed in May 1978 when Temple member Deborah Layton escaped from Jones' town with a warning.
