Women curators had only begun to be taken on in london heritage institutions as curators, professional curators, in the previous d or so. And this was a chance for them to really step up, because some of their male contemporaries had gone to war and left the women behind. Some people felt that they should be on the on the front but were not allowed to due to their restricted profession. But others came away with a sense of having played their part in the war effort.
