The First Modern War

It is the first modern war because there are some things happening in this war that we do associate with modern warfare. Infantry rifles, the British are making their rifles using machine tools and interchangeable parts. They're still dressing up like Napoleon was around but they're still fighting at very close quarters. It has these transitional elements. It's a bit like a hybrid car. It's got an old engine and a new engine. It's not quite clear at any one time which pieces of the machine are working, most effectively. The French will catch up later and so will the Russians.
