Stalin merged communism with this kind of Russian nationalism and patriotism. He found a way to make it work by talking about the Soviet Union rather than Russia, but in a way that allowed him to allide the fact that what he was fundamentally doing was rebuilding the Russian Empire under a communist rubric. This attempt to create a easy dichotomy between these things is false to fact. The communism also mattered.
