There was a theory back then that demography was destiny and that we were going to have a majority, minority population. That's before people understood that again, African Americans vote very heavily Democratic but Latinx voters and Asian Americans do not vote on Democratic in anything like the same proportions. The configuration of what constitutes whiteness changes a lot. Delivering a solid middle-class life is really, I think, what people are yearning for both in the UK and in the US. Absent that, as for second best, they will settle for someone who channels their anger against the elite. In my view, that's second best.
