The Genetics of Alcoholism
There may be something going on genetically with Arab or Persian people that protects them somewhat against alcoholism, but I can't find anything in the literature. East Africans carry a unique variant of the ADH-1B gene that has the same effect as the East Asian variant. The genes for alcohol flush reaction do occur in a small number of white people. And so if you needed any more convincing that addiction is a medical problem requiring a medical solution, I really don't know what else to tell you.
