This was a time of great ideological flux. It was a time when revolutionaries were taking from all sorts of influences. What they had in common was an unwillingness, i think, to work within colonial rule. They tried to take more direct action to actually overthrow european empires. And that, for many, meant a path of a violent resistance to colonial rule.
