The earl of mcartney was sent to bayjing in 17 93 as an emissary from the court of saint james, rather than the east india company. He tried to get official relations between england and china on more equal footing. The whole mission, in no time at all, endthed o getting bogged down and details and protocol. By this time, tea was already the national beverage of england. And by 18 hundred tea purchases from china were four million pounds sterling. Tea was no longer just a luxury enjoyed by only the rich and powerful. Othe common people as well. They too love their cupa.
