The Relationship Between Illness and Morality
During the Civil War, public health facilities was not widespread in the United States. Water and sewage systems, we didn't have those. So a lot of disease happened out of the Civil War. If you were sick, then this came down from maybe God. And then obviously then people started taking sickness and disease a little more seriously.
