Paul Strone: Our sense of the end causes us to think about time, right? If we knew that it was sort of endless, that it was eternal, then you don't really have a need for time and keeping track of it. So it does seem to that awareness of the end, the interest in the afterlife. I think it determines a lot of medieval ethics, what they thought a moral life looked like. It also led figures like Boethius in the early sixth century to mull over the concept of fortune.
