Why Nato?
Nato was established as a means to try and balance the power in europe. Was that not the whole purpose in the first place? The united states lapsed into isolation before the second world war, and the europeans were left to fend for security by themselves. nato allowed the french to have a much better policy, which was to integrate germany into an integrated military command structure. They originally wanted a treaty lasting ten years, but after 20 years it would have expired. Back in the late 19ties there was a sense of 'there was no such thing as nato anymore' And now we are at a point where nato has come full circle - with russia
