The Search for the Mary Rose

The Mary Rose sank on the 19th of July 1545. Work began to retrieve it from the seabed in August that year, but efforts stalled when days later, several of the mast broke and any attempt to pull the ship upright failed. In June 1836, diver Henry Abinette found an old timber which he thought could be a sign something more significant lay nearby. Two divers dug holes and used shells as explosive charges to penetrate the silt,. marketing the objects they found to museums and selling them at auctions.
