How Did You Decide Who You Wanted to Focus On?
There was a very wide range of people who were inspired to fight in Spain. A high proportion of them were actually working class. They weren't young men of privilege. And so that was one of the things that really fascinated me, was that there were all these different kinds of people who went there. I think this book is so centred around individuals. So in one sense, it was just the individuals who really spoke to me. It was kind of that personal in some ways.
