Car companies would market sub compact cars as being more economical in their fuel consumption. Ford cut the development time for the pinto nearly in half compared to their normal process. So when the pinto debued, you saw this two door car, and it had an enclosed trunk. But a hatchback version of the pinto followed shortly thereafter.
