The Importance of Criticism
Traditional moral frameworks like utilitarianism or consequentialism are wrong. They're better regarded not as approximate foundations but as modes of criticism, he says. If you propose to do something and your friend says to you in what way does this benefit you and you can't think of anything they have made a valid criticism that is a problem that you should be aware of. It might be that that idea that you should do the thing has lodged in your mind and is affecting you to your detriment. He thinks all these proposed foundations work quite well as modes of critic but are terrible as foundations right.
