The Pro-Worker View of the First World War
Stephen Fry: Kingsley had a very much more grim and materialistic view of what war actually is in terms of how it uses and abuses the working class for the sake of just keeping the system going. He'd kill talk about wage slaves, constantly berates workers for not having enough class consciousness. But at the same time, as I said, he's actually so anti-German and he leaves the socialist party of Canada that he's supportive of this of the war. The state was closely monitoring people including Kingsley during the war. They were aware that they would phrase things in a suited way, but they didn't brook dissent, you know, and they were concerned about this.
