The British Empire: The Most Benevolent of the Empires
The British Empire grew out of the East India Company which started as a trading company. It always had benevolent aspects to its rule, it believed in the rule of law and protection of trade. Out of that grew the British Raj which took over from the company after the mutiny. And the British state then took over with very much the aim of clemency.
