California's Gun Laws Date Back to 1989

In 1989, a gunman used an assault weapon to kill five children at a schoolyard in Stockton. That incident really galvanized state lawmakers and they banned assault style weapons soon afterwards. The modern gun restrictions date to the late 1960s when the Black Panther Party was conducting armed patrols in Oakland. And very soon after, the state legislature banned the open carry of loaded weapons.
