Newcastle lost 1-0 to Aston Villa in their final game of the season. Alan Shearer's side were all but guaranteed safety until a late goal from Peter Lovincrantz and Oberfermi Martins put them one nil up against Fulham. But they went on to lose 3-1 at home to Middlesbrough, who are now 14th in the Premier League. The Magpies have gone down after failing to win any of their last five games.
