Introduction
During the first wabor, britain and its empire mobilized men on a hitherto unprecedented scale. Tens of thousands of men in prefab wooden huts, corrugated iron clad roofs, wood stoves in the middle,. packed in around newly laid down railway tracks. A huge effort to prepare men for the fury of the battlefield. And salisbury plain in wiltshire became a massive armed camp. Is still used by the armed forces to day, but it is predominantly an area of farming and rural settlement with pretty villages dotted around amidst beautiful landscape that had been a very different scene in the first world war.
