The Three Stages of Tension
God is angry with Israel. He orders Moses to execute them in broad daylight before the Lord so that his fierce anger may turn away from Israel. The Hebrew here is a unique verb, it means to impale or sometimes it's translated as crucify. It only occurs in two different contexts in the Old Testament. Several sons of Saul are impaled as retribution.
