The Consequences of Forgiveness
I think that you have to look at this in terms of what God was wanting to do, which he said, which is wipe everyone out. You might die in the wilderness, but this does not mean that they will be forever cut off from from God. So it's a case of them trying to earn God's forgiveness by self appointed acts of redemption or something like that. They're taking what God explicitly said, and they're turning their backs on it.
