Social Reading

Social reading can often not give an accurate picture of what's going on. If you include high lights, people are more likely to buy a book because they see that other users have engaged with it. So this whole use of paratext and social reading can really confuse readers. And so with these annotations, why? Why do you want to see what other people have high lighted? It might be a curiosity, but ultimately, what does it add to the reading experience?
