During the 1970s, there was a tidal wave of kidnappings in France. Tom Sancton says that this was a period of violence and political violence. The police response to Watteau's kidnapping ended very badly for the kidnappers. And also more broadly, there was change in French society - disco era; liberation of sexual culture.
