The History of Murder in Britain
In Britain, there were more male murderers coming before the courts than female murderers. Of those who were prosecuted for crime, proportionately more women were charged with murder than men. But we might also take this with a pinch of salt because many more men are charged with manslaughter. Lizzie Borden and Grace Marks used arsenic as their weapon of choice. This seems to me to be a super Victorian weapon for a murder s. Is that right? Yes, well, advances in toxicology from about the 1830s made poison a lot easier to detect. And that's why we get this sudden bump in the historical record of poisoning cases.
