How Does Colonialism Fit Into Football?

Football's a slightly more complex one because we have to look at the informal empire as well as the formal empire. The spread of football to South America tends not to be through the formal empire, but through kind of trade and business links from the British. So it's kind of a complex pattern. I think colonialism kind of tells us something. And then we get when we get later in the 20th century and look at the rise of, for instance, the French-speaking African nations. A lot of that is explained by the significance of football as a form of education, but also in its promotion by missionaries.
