St. Lawrence County native Robert learned to swim in the St. Lawrence River at a very young age. But then his father died in the mid 1850s, so the family moved around looking for places to settle. They ended up back in New Orleans where they arrived on the same day the state of Louisiana ratified the Confederate Constitution.
