In the beginning of the war, the U.S. regarded attacks like Duh-Gina one as provocative. As time has gone on and Putin has not responded at that kind of doomsday level, I think probably in reprisal, I think the United States tolerance on the escalation question has increased. The Ukrainians have basically demonstrated how far they can go without the United States, both pulling them back entirely or without Putin doing something even more dreadful than he has.
