What Is Religion?
Reformation fixes in the western mind that religion is primarily doctrinal or propositional. The sixteenth seventeenth centuries is the great age of catechisms and confessions. People who perhaps now don't practise religion in the west still know, you know, that's what religion is. I've always been rather taken with the formula of a caron armstrong, very influential writer on religion,. You just have to sort of jump in and get on with it.
