Microsoft has been working on the Visual Studio Online Monaco editor since 2011. It was announced in 2014 at an event, but only had 3,000 users when it launched. In 2015, VS Code became available for desktop and mobile devices. The company is now looking to expand into new areas such as web development with its next-generation toolkit.
