The Social Ostracization of Women
Some historians have been onto this and said that in this period, women were getting away with murder because a hanging rate for women was declining. It strikes me that Florence Balvo, although we don't know whether she poisoned her husband, was effectively killed by him. She felt that her life as a member of a community as a social being was over and she turned to self-harm. And this is still what happens today as we learned from the psychologist Julia Shaw.
