Bus-ranging is a national legend and mythology in the way that we think of it today. Ned Kelly was very self-conscious about his styling, so he left letters for the police. He positioned himself as kind of a champion of the kind of the oppressed and the common people. And it was an interesting and useful kind of mold to be picked up by the new Australian nation after Federation in 1901.
