For most of American history, presidents have had to contend with an imperfect environment. They made it difficult for them to reach the public as a whole even though they recognize the political opportunities in doing so. So I want to trace some of those variables over the 200 plus years that we'll talk about in terms of those constraints on communication. And how those shifts in everything from transportation to media explain a whole lot about different presidential communication styles period to period.
