The Paneros in the Classical Greek Comedy

In the early Greek comedies, often what will happen is that you will have some sort of a serious problem. And there will be someone who's going to try to take care of the problem. In classical Greek, the Paneros is the loser, essentially. He's this sort of chatlin-esque kind of character and would never be able to really save the world. But he ends up actually doing that which is necessary to save the world, get the girl, and eventually get married.
