The book is widely used to this day as a classical card of the grieving process. Lewis wrote it under a pen name as a way of helping his own bereavement because it was so successful. The fact that it has proved so helpful to other people, if you like, is a bonus. But Lewis, I think, really saw this primarily as self-therapy.
