He was sort of the cranky character and then they kind of softened him when they gave him nephews and Scrooge McDuck to deal with. The characters all get the same abilities, but they are represented in a different way. When you find the thing that gives you your ability, it's like for your wall jump, making mouse wall jumps, he takes out a big pencil and sticks it in the wall. But when goofy wall jumping, he uses a plunger. It's the same effect, but it's visualized differently. Something a little more character-specific.
