The wife of Bath is the first ordinary woman you've said in English literature where they're not a princess. She talks about her genitals and when she likes to have sex, but also tells us about domestic abuse. Chaucer makes her more of a subjective individual than any of his other characters. Her husband had a book which was a collection of tracts about how awful women were.
