The Rise and Fall of Freudian Psychoanalysis

The 1950s were, you know, they're commonly referred to in histories of psychoanalysis as a sort of golden age for that field. Over half of practicing psychiatrists in the country had at least one foot squarely in the psychoanalytic camp. There were exceptions to that; some interesting figures sought to bridge the divide between Freudianism and neurophysiology. But in general, those efforts did not really enjoy much success. This was also the decade that marked the beginnings of the emergence of a whole new approach that ultimately totally displaced psychoanalysis.
