For a lot of people, the wars were fairly abstract because most people haven't served in the military. It's an all volunteer force. And so it was very antiseptic compared to previous wars. The pernicious thing about things like inflation and crime is you cannot tell people these aren't problems, because they know their problems, right? These are political issues.
