A proud nation in the nineteenth century, even up until the mid twentieth century, a proud nation, buzzing with industry, developed, advanced, was in want of an empire. In fact, the destruction of some of the great empires at the end of the first war blinds us to the fact that the british and french empires had expanded. They were at their greatest territorial extent following the first war.
